![]() Interest in that time was to a degree linked to nationalistic concerns ( Henry 1965, Henry 1967, Masai 1947), a tendency against which more recent scholarship has reacted (see Historiography). Academic publication of surveys on Insular manuscripts peaked during the 1930s to 1970s. Moreover, trends since the early 1980s, responding to the theoretical preoccupations of related humanities disciplines, have tended toward iconographic and contextual studies, and publishers consider monographs on the most well-known individual manuscripts more marketable than scholarly overviews (see Studies on Individual Manuscripts). The gaps in our knowledge about specific contexts have given rise to a sometimes frustrating conflict of opinions in scholarship but also to lively debate and an ever-widening discussion.įew modern overviews of Insular manuscript illumination have been published, in part because it is perceived as a specialist subject and, in part, because the relatively small number of surviving examples and the uncertain attribution and dating of nearly all of them make an overview difficult without the context of contemporary sculpture, metalwork, and architecture. ![]() Royal involvement left some record in texts and in the archaeology of royal sites such as Dunadd. Production of Insular manuscripts is thought to have been done almost exclusively in monasteries, but the involvement of royal and aristocratic families in these communities certainly exerted a considerable force. Most of the decorated manuscripts have undoubtedly been lost, however, and determining dates and places of origin and use for those that have survived is fraught with difficulty, with only a few of them attributable and datable by evidence such as scribal colophons. Geographically its embrace reaches beyond the islands of Britain and Ireland to Continental centers (Luxeuil, Bobbio, Saint Gall, Echternach, Fulda, and others) founded by Irish and Anglo-Saxon missionaries and their followers, the major figures being Columbanus, Willibrord, and Boniface. The chronological reach of Insular manuscript illumination extends from the 7th century, when the groundwork laid by Irish monastic founders (such as Patrick, Brendan, Columba, and Aidan) and the missionaries sent from Italy and Gaul to the Anglo-Saxons (Augustine, Mellitus, Paulinus, Felix, and Birinus) had begun to flourish, and it comes to an end in the later years of the Carolingian empire, with changes brought with the arrival of the Vikings. Other types of illuminated texts include prayers, histories, lives of saints, biblical commentaries, poetry, natural science texts, liturgical books, canon law, and grammatical studies. Of all illuminated Insular manuscripts, biblical manuscripts survive in the largest numbers, but they were not alone in receiving decoration. By the late 8th century, Gospel books and Psalters, the most significant biblical texts for Christian thought and prayer, appear to have become sites for development of complex interpretative images and traditions of graphic presentations that incorporated concepts of orthodoxy, liturgical and devotional meaning, and the role of the church. Moreover, the imported medium of book art required adaptations of native decorative forms and assimilation of foreign traditions, such as illusionism and depictions of the human figure. Manuscript decoration played an important role in visual art developments because of the Bible’s centrality to Christian thought, ritual, and authority. Another term, “Hiberno-Saxon,” is sometimes used, but it, too, is not entirely satisfactory because it appears to exclude all but Irish and Anglo-Saxon contributions and to ignore the complexity of the various groups’ interactions. The name “Insular,” however, is used here not to denote a style but rather to provide a simplified label for the stylistically diverse examples of decorated manuscripts from 7th- through mid-9th-century Irish, Anglo-Saxon, Welsh, Pictish, British, and Scottish contexts. Artistic developments in this context included mixtures of native art with Mediterranean as well as interpretations of Late Antique and contemporary Mediterranean art. Linked to the arrival of Christianity, it includes some of the earliest surviving examples from groups of northern European people who, never having lived fully within the Roman Empire, received the religion from a culture outside their own milieu. The manuscript decoration produced in Ireland and the British Isles from about 600 to 850 marks the advent of medieval book art.

Lifetime warranty for as long as you own the mattress Ships free and arrives to your door within 2-4 business days To see the full unboxing process, check out our video review of the Nectar mattress.Ĭheck out all the purchasing details you’ll need to know when you decide to buy a Nectar mattress. We didn’t find the Nectar supportive enough to recommend it for all stomach sleepers, though very lightweight stomach sleepers may find it suitable. Without proper support, your hips will fall forward and your back will arch–a recipe for lower back pain. Stomach sleepers generally require more firmness and support than people who prefer other sleep positions. So if you love memory foam but also toss and turn, the Nectar mattress is a solid choice for you. ![]() The Nectar scored an 8.5 out of 10 in responsiveness, which is uncommonly high for a memory foam mattress. We felt the Nectar provided this responsiveness much better than most traditional memory foam mattresses. To support this flip-flopping back and forth, you also need a bed with great responsiveness. If you swap between back and side sleeping throughout the night, you need the support and pressure relief required by both positions. ![]() However, heavier side sleepers may find they need a mattress with a thicker comfort layer if they sink too far into the Nectar. Pressure relief is essential for side sleepers to protect shoulders and hips, and we felt only minimal pressure on these joints when lying on our sides. With an 8.5 out of 10 in pressure relief, the Nectar is a good choice for side sleepers. We found the Nectar to provide good lumbar support and a comforting hug-like sensation. As a medium-firm bed with a high score in pressure relief, the Nectar is a good choice for back sleepers. Back Sleepersīack sleepers need a supportive mattress that provides enough pressure relief to avoid lower back pain. The middle-of-the-road firmness of the Nectar mattress, coupled with its responsive surface and pressure-relieving properties, makes it a great option for side sleepers, back sleepers, and combination sleepers. Unfortunately, each of us had a slight dip in alignment, so the Nectar received a mediocre alignment score.ĭoes Nectar Support My Sleeping Position? ![]() So to test how good spinal alignment is for all you side sleepers, we each laid on our sides and saw how straight our spines were. A straight spine keeps kinks out of your back and improves posture. If you have back pain, spine alignment is one of the main things you should look for in a bed. Long Delivery Times: While most Nectar products ship within 2-4 business days, Nectar does source some materials from overseas and this can lead to delayed delivery. The Nectar is constructed with a cooling cover and breathable foam layers, but it won’t allow for as much air circulation as an innerspring or hybrid mattress will. Hot: Because of its all-foam construction, some customers claim that the Nectar mattress can sleep hot. It’s not necessarily a disqualifying score, but be aware that optimal spine alignment can reduce the chances of neck and back pain, tossing and turning, and other sleep problems. Spine Alignment: Nectar’s worst-performing category in Mattress Advisor testing was spine alignment (7.5/10).Ventilating the room will help expedite this off-gassing process. This is normal and should go away within a few hours. Off-Gassing: We found the Nectar mattress to have a mild scent when we unboxed it.If you’re an edge-of-the-bed sleeper, this will help prevent you from rolling off. Edge Support: For a foam mattress, Nectar also scored high in edge support. You can think of responsiveness as freedom of movement, so if you toss and turn throughout the night, the Nectar will quickly adjust to your sleeping positions. Responsiveness: Even though the Nectar is a memory foam bed, it still scored high in responsiveness. This makes it a great option for side sleepers. Pressure Relief: We gave the Nectar an 8.5/10 for pressure relief, meaning it will appropriately cushion pressure points like hips and shoulders that are more prone to aches and pains.Typically, we see trial periods around 100 days and warranties that last for 10 years. Sleep Trial and Warranty: Nectar certainly beats most rivals by offering a full calendar year to try out their mattress and a warranty that lasts as long as you own the mattress.Pros & Cons of the Nectar Mattress ✅ Pros ⭐Total Score for the Nectar Mattress: 8.7/10⭐ Learn more about our review and scoring process. ![]() Then we calculate our final score using a weighted average. Majority of the time spent downhill skiing requires eccentric force to be generated by the quadriceps muscles – a specific type of contraction where the muscle is lengthening whilst controlling and creating movement. More specifically for older adults, specifically prescribed exercises can also help to augment bone mineral density and prevent fractures. Regardless of how it occurs, it is widely agreed that pre-ski season conditioning (involving strength, flexibility and agility) can reduce injury incidence and severity.Īcross all ages, muscle strength is proposed to reduce the strain on the ligaments of the knee during different movements. Falling backwards and having the downhill ski dig into the snow, creating internal rotation on an already bent knee.Landing from a jump with an extended knee, drawing the tibia (shin) forward on the femur (thigh).Falling forward and catching the inside of the ski, forcing the knee into a position of rotation. There are three well-researched mechanisms which explain why skiier’s knees are so frequently injured: Without doubt, the most common injuries for skiiers involve the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of the knee, closely followed by damage to the medial cruciate ligament (MCL). Read on to discover how you can increase your ski fitness and come out of the season injury-free! Whether you are new to the sport or a seasoned ski bunny, skiing certainly can take its toll on the body. It’s estimated that 200 million people worldwide hit the slopes annually. While the temperature is dropping, cars are frosting over and the heaters are getting turned up, skiiers everywhere are rejoicing at the prospect of a good snowfall. Find out how to increase your ski fitness and come out of the season injury-free! This property is central to the utility of the momentum Model, as we shall see in the following modules. ![]() Only external forces can have a net influence on the motion of the system. The internal forces cancel out and have no net effect on the overall motion of a multi-body system (though as we shall see, it is important to remember that the motion of the pieces of a multi-body system are affected by internal forces). It is very important to notice the qualifier "external" on the sum of forces in this law. You can show that this form of Newton's Second Law reduces to the regular F = ma for the case of a single object with constant mass if you substitute in the definition of momentum in terms of velocity. In order to understand how interactions change momentum, we need a version of Newton's Second Law that involves momentum. In other words, the momentum Model will allow us to consider a single system to be composed of a collection of several point particles. Other than linear momentum, there is one another type of momentum, and that is angular momentum. The simplicity of this expression allows us to continue to think intuitively in terms of the components of the multi-body system, since it is easy to recover the momentum of the whole from the momentum of the parts. Linear momentum has a definite role in determining the 2nd law of motion. It turns out that the appropriate momentum to use is simply the sum of the momenta of the parts. Suppose instead we asked for the momentum of the system composed of the truck plus its cargo. Working with the motion of the center of mass is often counter-intuitive, and therefore we will not focus on it. This point moves in a way that is different than the cargo's movement and also different than the truck's. In other words, we would have to imagine the system to be a single point particle which is located at a special point somewhere between the position of the cargo and that of the truck (remember that the velocity Model can only be applied to a single point particle). What velocity should we assign to the system? It turns out that the appropriate velocity to use in the equations of dynamics is the velocity of the center of mass. Imagine you want to consider the truck plus the cargo as a single system. Unfortunately, the cargo is not well secured, and as the truck begins to accelerate the cargo starts to slide back along the truck bed.Īt a certain instant, the x-velocity of the truck is v t,x and the x-velocity of the cargo is v c,x. To see the advantage, consider this example:Ī truck of mass m t is loaded with a heavy cargo of mass m c. ![]() ![]() For a multi-body system, however, there is a significant advantage in using momentum instead of velocity to describe the motion. Momentum is Additive in a Multi-Body Systemįor a single object, momentum and velocity are essentially equivalent since momentum is directly proportional to velocity. The units of momentum, as can be seen from its definition, are kg m/s. The direction of the momentum of an object is exactly the same as the direction of the object's velocity. It is important to note that momentum is a vector. Momentum (which is given the symbol p) is defined by:įor a single object of mass m traveling with velocity v. p momentum mv v 1 speed of ball just before collision v 2 speed of ball just after collision u speed of the board just after collision The collisions between the inelastic and elastic balls and the board are partially inelastic collisions. ![]() Properties of Momentum Definition in terms of Velocity Explain the advantage of momentum over velocity as the description of motion in a multi-body system.Δ L \Delta L Δ L delta, L is change of angular momentum, τ \tau τ tau is net torque, and Δ t \Delta t Δ t delta, t is time interval.Ĭhange in angular momentum is proportional to average net torque and the time interval the torque is applied. In this module, we define momentum and impulse.Īfter completing this module you should be able to: Δ L = τ Δ t \Delta L=\tau \Delta t Δ L = τ Δ t delta, L, equals, tau, delta, t L L L L is angular momentum, m m m m is mass, v v v v is linear velocity, and r ⊥ r_\perp r ⊥ r, start subscript, \perp, end subscript is the perpendicular radius from a chosen axis to the mass's line of motion.Īngular momentum of an object with linear momentum is proportional to mass, linear velocity, and perpendicular radius from an axis to the line of the object's motion.
